CBIS 2215 Project 6

Intro to Web Design

We will progress through three steps in designing our professional Web Sites:

  1. Planning - Mapping out a site
  2. Designing - Using HTML editors (notepad, Word, Composer, FrontPage, Dreamweaver) to lay out the design of the pages
  3. Implementing - Placing files on a server to make our pages available on the Internet

At each step, we will focus on three important issues in all Web design:

  • Navigation,
  • Content, and
  • Consistency

Web Site Assignment

You have three options for planning, designing, and implementing a three-page Web site for this project:

  • A business Web site with a home page, a products/services page, and an about us/contact page
  • A teacher Web site with a home page, a syllabus or project page, and a sample weekly calendar page
  • A personal/organizational Web site with a home page, an about me page, and a pictures page

For whichever of the three above Web sites you choose to produce, you must include each of the following on every page:

On every page:

  • A navigation bar
  • Table or page background colors/images
  • Text colors
  • Table layouts
  • At least one image
  • Ensure Web Accessibility for the disabled (Click here for ten tips from the Web Accessibility Initiative: http://info.ex.ac.uk/its/helpdesk/tentips.html)

Additionally, you must ensure that each of the following appear at least once in your site:

At least one occurrence of each of the following in the site:

Optional additional improvements (only add these after you have achieved all of the above):

Sample ideas for the Teacher Web Site are given below:

On main page:

  • Instructor’s Name
  • Subject/Grade-level

  • E-mail address - hyperlinked

  • Information about your class: Location, School Name, School Mascot, etc.
  • Welcome video

Calendar page:
  • One full week of lesson activities (brief descriptions/titles of each day's learning activities)
  • At least one hyperlink to an online lesson (you may use your Web-based lesson plan or a lesson found elsewhere on the Web)

Syllabus page:

  • Course name

  • Class information (room number, time, etc.)

  • Purpose/ Objectives

  • Attendance Policy

  • Evaluation (grade %'s)

  • Required Materials

  • General Expectations

  • Other Rules/Policies

You may adapt a syllabus found online in your subject/grade level, or put up a project assignment instead.
